Historically, the park surrounding the area of sand dunes was built in 1964 by local residents. In 2009, its neighbors sought for the closure of the park's sand dune portion due to overcrowding, traffic and noise. It was temporarily closed by the City Council and was reopened in 2010 with the implementation of usage mitigation rules. At present, the park's sand dunes portion can be used with advanced reservations. Sand Dune Park is open from 8 am to 7 pm Mondays to Saturdays.
